St Mathias Campus, Bristol

We were appointed by Barratt Homes to undertake an initial architectural and civil engineering appraisal for the redevelopment of the University of West of Englands’, St Matthias Campus site in the heart of Fishponds, Bristol.

The site included a number of existing listed buildings and lies in a Conservation Area. Part of the site formed a section of the historic parkland associated with Oldbury Court Park. The relocation of the UWE Campus was also a key part of the proposals.

Following the initial appraisal work, and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, we developed the architectural and engineering design for the residential part of the scheme through close collaboration with key consultees including Bristol City Council, English Heritage, Sport England and comments received at a Design Review workshop.

We also designed the exhibition material to support a public consultation event.

The layout design reflects a modern-day ‘Garden Village’ and the properties demonstrate a contemporary interpretation of the historic area of Fishponds.

Our engineers worked closely with an independent artist and landscape consultant to help create a modern solution for an attenuation pond positioned in the new extended parkland to the north of the site.

The detailed application resulted in the approval of 217 residential properties, a new Steiner school and sports hall and a large extension to the historic parkland.
